The novel is usually written from a first-person perspective, spinning around the character of Mary Brennan. As written inside the Prologue on-page 2, ‘My name is usually Tom Brennan and this can be my account. ' Tom, a typical New South Wales adolescent, looks forward to his rugby, friends and normal life.
